With a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines available, Audi really is spoiling us for choice, but what are the main differences between the selections? Well, really best suited as an about town car, the entry level petrol is understandably limited. However, take the small step up to a more powerful petrol engine and you immediately have on your hands a vehicle that is flexible as well as fast. Our personal favourite is the entry level petrol model. Why? It's simply a great all rounder in terms of power, economy and that all important price. Each to their own but we would personally avoid some of the diesel models which really seem to want to offer the opposite of everything their petrol cousins do so well.

As you level up in the range, so too does the quality of the suspension with three different trim levels. The standard model is firm enough but the Audi A1 Sportback has an edgy yet still comfortable feel. The S line models are a little too extravagant in this regard, for us at least. Regardless of which model you choose, avoid adding bigger wheels as we really believe they hinder the ride quality. The A1 may not be as sharp into corners as a Mini but nowhere near enough to take away the great feel.

If you like your cars to run quietly, the A1 (in petrol form at least) is the quietest premium super mini available. Not only is the engine gentle and quiet but you are also well protected from exterior road and wind noise when travelling quickly.

So, it's quiet which is great but this petrol model has another trick up its sleeve, with the engine stop-start system proving invaluable. When cruising, it shuts down 2 cylinders meaning that as well as a really smooth ride, you are also saving some petrol! In contrast, the diesel model isn't quite as friendly in this regard, with a bit of a rattle, even when the vehicle is idling.

Your A1 preferences should be carefully considered with SE, S Line and Audi A1 Sportback all offering varying trim and equipment packages. Bigger wheels and firmer suspension are all things to pay attention to before you settle on your model of choice. If you are a fan of gadgets and customisation, you won't be let down here and we heartily recommend the contrasting roof! If you want it, just as with the A8, you can also include the most up to date navigation and infotainment systems.
