Although there seems to be an abundance of Audi A4 Saloon cars with both diesel and petrol engines, we can only comment on the ones we have driven so far. We tried mid and high end diesels as well as something similar from the petrol point of view. The diesels that we tried, especially the ones with larger engines are exceptional. Take into account that they emit relatively little CO2 and it makes it even more impressive that they pull so well from low revs. We feel that the petrol engines suffer by comparison and seem to need a lot more revs to reach optimum performance.

The Audi A4 is often billed as being sporty. Without being unfair, we don't think this is particularly accurate and even though the grip is good and handling is generally solid with good balance, it really isn't "sporty"! This is especially notable at high speeds when despite some weight to the steering it still feels a bit on the rubbery side. There are more negatives we are afraid and the ride quality itself comes into question when even road surfaces that would be considered smooth tend to prove a little awkward to negotiate.

The A4 is generally blessed with a cabin that is relatively quiet and most engines also benefit from this lack of overall noise. There are exceptions, however, with middle of the range petrol engines suffering more than others in terms of engine sound. What might disappoint even more is the noise that seems to be created by the large window mirrors, especially when moving at a good clip.

We are certainly fans of the basic SE trim which certainly provides a package of note – climate control, cruise control and 17"alloys along with automatic headlights and wipers, rear parking sensors and the ever more sought after Bluetooth! The SE diesels offer the option of an upgrade that is the Technik pack, where you will find your sat nav and leather upholstery amongst other bits.

It's fair to say that the A4 S Line has a look that sets it apart with some seriously large alloys and a suspension bordering on sporty. The Black Edition is an S Line in all but name, only with 19" alloys, stereo with DAB radio and a styling package that is unique.

If you are looking for a decent company car, the low CO2 makes this a really good choice! This is a real all rounder when it comes to value and has great equipment and decent finish. This handles so well in wet conditions and the snow too, easy rivalling, if not bettering two wheel drives! You do need to think through the equipment side of things, but you should really think through everything when buying a car!
