All of the Land Rover Freelander models are equipped with a turbo diesel engine, of which there are two versions. The less powerful of the two only really reveals itself as such when holding onto the revs because both versions produce decent low end pull. The more powerful version gets a 6 speed automatic gearbox as standard, although you can also opt for this particular gearbox with the less powerful model. If not, buyers of this version get a 6 speed manual instead.
If there are uneven surfaces on the road, the Freelander does a great job of making them feel like they are not there and on the motorway you could be forgiven for thinking you are in a top end luxury car. Having said that, heading into the corners and the body leans a bit and over more undulating terrain the car tends to bounce a little bit. Accurate steering can't quite compensate for the lack of some genuine of pace. It could also be improved with a bit more weight when travelling quickly.
Entry level models and the 2 wheel drive version are not blessed with the fantastic Terrain Response System that is one of the Land Rover's hallmarks. Those versions that do have it are able to use a rotary knob to optimise the set up and therefore performance, depending on what surface or conditions you are driving in.
If you are travelling at 50mph or under, you will find that the Freelander is incredibly smooth. The engine sound can be a bit throaty when you put your foot down but any suspension clatter is conveniently softened. When travelling on the motorway however, this car loses some of its finesse with lots of wind noise, likely generated by the boxy body shape. The noise is so imposing that noises from other areas of the car are almost irrelevant!
A variety of models and versions get a variety of equipment and trim packages. Across the board you will get alloys, air conditioning and CD player. Upgrading to the GS version will see the addition of rear parking sensors, the Terrain Response system (mentioned above), cruise control and climate control. Select the XS version to get sat nav, electric front seats and a more impressive stereo. Perhaps the cream of the crop is the HSE version which adds more on top, such as all leather upholstery and a CD multi changer.

I have had my Freelander for more than 6 months now and I am really pleased with it. It has dealt really well with all the weather conditions that have been thrown at it. 35mpg is about standard but if you hit the road for a proper journey you can eek about 40mpg out of it which I am happy with. Looks nice and is comfortable too...it's a great Land Rover!
