Those considering buying a new Mercedes-Benz GL Class vehicle will have the option of three different engines, so let’s take a quick look. We have sampled one of the petrol offerings and one of its diesel counterparts. Both of them are impressive in terms of acceleration, especially considering the size of the vehicle, with a nice automatic transmission providing able support, so no complaints with the torque on offer. However, despite this undoubted power, we wouldn’t say either model is super quick but if you are in the market for this kind of vehicle, it’s probably something you have already dealt with in your decision making. There’s a third option available too in the shape of the GL63 AMG.

As we saw with the engine set up, this particular Mercedes has been geared towards steady progression rather than any excessive sporty flair. So, you do get a pretty comfortable ride but there is an unfortunate pay off and that comes in the form of steering that veers on the side of light, with not enough feedback. If you like optional extras, it is possible to add active anti roll bars to the package and these are certainly noticeable when snaking through corners at speed, remaining impressively flat as you do so. You might expect that this comes at the expense of ride quality, but thankfully not.

The Mercedes-Benz GL Class is an extremely refined range with both petrol and diesel engines being very comfortable when handling top motorway speeds. As with other Mercedes, the cabin is impressively quiet, with very little noise making it through from either the road or the wind outside. Bearing in mind that this is a vehicle with seven seats, even those at the back won’t have to shout above external noise to comfortably chat to those riding in the front seats.

For those that always pay close attention to the trim and equipment packages, there is certainly plenty to get stuck into in both the standard range across all models and all those optional extras for those who like to tinker with the extra bits and pieces. As standard, you will get things like heated front seats, automatic climate control, electric windows, panoramic roof above the third row of seats and an outside temperature gauge. Additional extras, if you want them, will obviously come at a price but they are certainly there if you want to indulge.
