With just a couple of diesel engines to choose from for the Mercedes-Benz ML Class Estate, it's just as well that both of them offer more than adequate performance. The basic model is obviously the slower of the two but in terms of all round performance, may be the option that many buyers go for. It accelerates well and feels really nice and smooth when at cruising speed. Alternatively, the more powerful engine option offers lots of torque when the revs are low and is pretty effortless as it powers up. However, we can't help returning to the entry level model for the all round benefits, which include decent fuel economy.
The ML Class Estate can't compete with some of its rivals in terms of agility and driver perks but where it more than makes up for this is in the layers and layers of comfort and its calm, refined feel. At high speeds on the motorway, it delivers an exceptionally assured performance, where stability is a particular standout. The downside of this is the body lean – it's a little too noticeable and perhaps the suspension too is a little suspect, picking up on a few too many of the smaller lumps and bumps in the road, especially at lower speeds. However, some of its relevant competitors are even worse in this regard.
Both engines perform well in certain areas, although the entry level model has a bit more rattle when putting your foot down. Thankfully, this smoothes out significantly once the car has settled into a rhythm. The more powerful option, we have to say, is nothing short of silky smooth and very quiet as well. There are some small amounts of noise from the wind around the both the roof rails and sunroof but when the engine is so smooth, it's difficult to really make a complaint here.
There is no shortage of standard equipment for the Mercedes-Benz ML Class Estate, so you won't be left craving extra bits and pieces. As standard you will get alloys, sat nav, climate control, a styling kit and those fancy front seats that adjust electrically. If you do decide you want some extras, then you will need a bigger budget in order to get leather upholstery, wood trim, digital radio and the air suspension.
