The Mini Hatchback is certainly regarded as a classic and there are a decent variety of engines to choose from, with, it has to be said, mixed results. The entry level petrol engine certainly delivers a good performance, sharp and smooth in all the right places. Over on the diesel side things are steady and reliable without ever delivering the same levels of enjoyment as its petrol counterpart. The Cooper S engine is pretty good for a hot hatch but the SD diesel engine doesn't feel responsive or quick. Perhaps the best of the bunch is the engine in the John Cooper Works model which is both fast and powerful.
Regardless of your engine choice, one thing remains constant and that's because the Mini is always fun to drive. Its famous go kart handling makes it tremendous fun, especially on roads with plenty of bends. The handling also delivers a good sense of weight with plenty of effective response from the steering. Despite having a somewhat firm ride, the Mini Hatchback is also a pleasure to drive around built up areas.
The petrol engines seem to fare a bit better than the diesels with the latter occasionally sounding a little rough around the edges. The SD is perhaps the biggest culprit. The petrol engines in comparison are smooth and clean. If you have to have a real moan at this Mini, it's that it perhaps suffers from too much noise from the road and it doesn't even need to hit any great speed for this to kick in. Wind noise can also be an issue. Despite an awkward problem with the gearstick, where it can be a little too easy to hit reverse when you actually wanted to slip into first, it still remains a fairly slick operation.
The basic Cooper trim package comes with a pretty good line up, including remote central locking, alloys, air con, electric windows and a CD player. If you choose to select the Cooper S version, you will get the addition of a much sportier design both on the inside and exterior of the car. There are Sport and Media packs available as extra options.

I am really enjoying my Mini Cooper so far. I've only had it a few weeks and I use it to commute to work and it handles everything thrown at it really nicely...even a long stint on the motorway. It's powerful, so you don't need to do much to make it perform and perhaps the most surprising thing, is that it's got plenty of room in the front, so there's never a sense of feeling cramped.
