Petrol engine fans will have a slightly better selection dilemma when it comes to the BMW 2 Series Convertible, although those who always prefer to have a diesel engine underneath them will also have a choice of 3 different engine types. Some of the lower end petrol engines are not particularly impressive and feel a bit slow, but as you step up through the various versions available, more power becomes available and the real potential of the car is unleashed.
Initial reactions are that some of the preciseness of the Coupe is unfortunately not carried over into the 2 Series Convertible. Having said that, this particular car, still remains a lot of fun behind the wheel and fairs really well against its convertible competitors. The steering is pleasingly sharp and grip largely impressive and this could be thanks to the overall rigidness of the body. Despite some bumpiness felt through the tyres on uneven surfaces, this is a ride that for the most part, promotes a healthy level of comfort.
BMW has opted to use fabric for its folding roof on the 2 Series Convertible and this certainly makes the car a little lighter, especially as many other convertibles opt for a metal roof. As you would expect, there is some almost unavoidable noise from the wind when you build up a bit of speed but this is well countered by the relative quietness of the various engines available. Road noise is not a big issue either. Some versions are fitted with an auto stop start system and it works really well without any hiccups.
Your trim package will very much depend on which version you opt for, with the basic package including electric windows, alloys, auto wipers and headlights, an input socket for MP3 and air conditioning. Stepping up to a Sport version will give you bigger wheels, fog lamps at the front and sportier seats. The SE versions also get those fog lights and adds in some rear parking sensors and climate control. The M Sport will reward you with bigger alloys and a bodykit.
